Bryan: Not Knocking 3* Players

  • What percentage of available players are 5* ; 4*; and 3* players.
Does a 3* mean BCS Division caliber?
I am happy how this class is coming together, but the latest Auburn commits and offers are leaning towards 3* players. Is this staff putting speed as a qualifier. One quality I have noticed from these pick ups and offers was SPEED.

I know Auburn will score points in bunches, but I am still concerned with DEFENSE. I am getting the impression the staff change has impacted our defensive recruiting a little.
I don't get it. This staff looks solid to me and I would expect the opposite.

  • Not Bryan, but if you look at the recruiting rankings, the top teams (which also generally seem to be the teams competing for championships) have considerably more 4* recruits than 3* - typically about 2 to 1. The second tier (where Auburn is currently) have considerably more 3* than 4* recruits. If you look at the teams in this group, they are generally competitive but don't win championships. As you go lower, the teams have almost no 4* players. Of course, there is no science here and this is just a snapshot in time. My personal opinion is that when Auburn reaches the point where we tip the scales and begin signing more 4* than 3* recruits on a recurring basis, we will be back in the championship hunt regularly.

There's way to much luck involved currently in the selection process for a "championship".
