The sports world has been buzzing the last few days over the decision of Kansas City Royals pitcher Gil Meche to retire from the game, thus forfeiting $12.4 million in guaranteed money he had coming this season. His stated reason for walking away is that he is "not earning his keep," and he feels bad taking that much money given that his on-field performance has been so poor of late.
If memory serves, I seem to recall Bo Jackson doing something similar. Am I dreaming this, or did Bo not renegotiate his contract with the White Sox for less money because he felt he was overpaid? I seem to remember him also using the "I'm not earning my keep" explanation.
I haven't been able to find anything on Google -- do any of you recall this happening?
Not sure about Bo, but Andre Dawson did this in order to stay with the Chicago Cubs. He offered to play for free, which wasn't allowed but ended up taking a huge pay cut to stay.
