You know.....I have been "one of those" against the very thought of Petrino at Auburn -primarily based on his past character...however, after some time to think more in depth about it all...if the man's own wife has forgiven him and trusts him, why shouldn't we at Auburn? He is a damn good coach...and I think hiring him would propel Auburn back into relativity on a much faster track than some of the other, more unproven options we seem to have at this point.
He does have Auburn ties...been a part of the "Family" before...and did well when he was here. I was one that supported the notion of hiring him as OC, because I know he can do the job. Also, the rest of the league knows he can do the job.
I'm kind of leaning his way right now...sure, keep him on a "short leash" and allow him to "prove" his character...forgiveness is something we should all know how to do -especially since none are perfect. I think his hiring just might be a beneficial "long term" solution to both parties...and establish a trust like we don't seem to have had around the Auburn Family since the days of Shug. That would be nice to have again.
Contemplate on it....I have.
My primary concern would be if he would hire an OC and DC and let them do the job- rather than meddling like it sounds af if Gene has been doing for a few years...I don't recall just how well his defenses were at Arkansas, but it seems they were effective, given the Hawgs success during his tenure.
I also feel his unafraid to go "to to toe" against the demon to the west in our state...I'm sure his hiring would elicit jeers -even from our own Family...but just think of the fear it would instantly put into the hearts of those coaching staffs and fans of opposing teams.
ALL IN.......Auburn Tigers -2010 BCS National Champions! WDE!!!
He will be his own OC wherever he ends up. I can't ever see him giving that up. He's one of the best (if not THE best) in the business.
Bobby Petrino was at Louisville and apparently elsewhere THE HEAD of the football program. Period. At Arkansas his brother Paul was the OC but the entire coaching staff seemed to be very close and worked as one. Inspite of the motorcycle/staff member incident Petrino is known for his long hours of intense work and hre gets the same from his assistants. Throughout all of the articles, etc., read or heard about Petrino one theme that seems to be agreed on by almost everyone is that BP is the best offensive mind and even best available HC'ing candidate ot there now.
On this blog is a connect to a couple of articles written by Louisville sports writers that cover his way of doing things while there. Well worth the read.
