Bielema, Malzahn picked as top first-year coaches in SEC

  • Bret Bielema picked as top first-year coach in SEC - ESPN

The SEC welcomes in four new head coaches to the league this year. All have tall tasks in front of them, and all of them will face the immediate press

  • If it's the same story I read earlier it seemed more of a name recognition thing more than anything else. Gus had one year to impress as a HC and did. Bielema has had several and hasn't impressed me yet.

  • I think in a few years we're going to be asking what went wrong for Bielema. Arky doesn't have much talent right now, and I don't think Bielema has ever faced recruiting competition like he is about to see, not just from the SEC but from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and all of the Texas teams.

This is true on all points...plus

Arkansas is going to find itself in the same position Auburn was in last year...meaning...

    1. All of Arkansas' players was recruited to run Bobby Petrino's power spread system. And honestly they didn't do well I recruiting his last 3 years. Changing to CBB's power run game is going to be a monumental task. Not because of scheme...but because of talent.

    2. They've had a high attrition rate the last 2 years.

    3. They graduated almost all of their definitive skill players with no real proven back-ups, including most importantly, they have no proven QB.

    4. The most important place they lack depth and talent is the OL, DE's and LB's. not a real good equation for success.

Arkansas is going to have to recruit at a level they have never been able to to be successful in the SEC. Can they do it? I have my doubts.

  • I just don't think Bielema is SEC caliber, he whined about Meyer's "SEC" recruiting tactics while at Wisconsin. He is bringing an offense that requires A LOT of defensive talent... let's face it, Arkansas has not recruited very well at all. Outside of the Big 10, his teams never really impressed me at all. They looked extremely slow when they played in bowl games and at times, weak.

I really think Arkansas over estimated themselves when it came to making the biggest hire. They definitely made the biggest headlines, but its not a good fit at all. Like Frazier's dad said...
