Before you settle on which truck to get you should get a good idea of what type of camper you will possibly buy. Are you talking about a truck camper that rides in the truck bed, a travel trailer, a fifth wheel trailer or a pop up camper. You should also research what size you are considering and what the overall weight is and tongue weight is. When looking at the weight of the camper you also have to consider the weight of your truck occupants and items you might carry in the truck bed and add these weights to the weight of the camper. Once you know this information you will be in a better position to decide on a truck. It would be a shame to buy a standard pickup and find that you really need a heavy duty truck (eg. 250/2500, 350/3500) with a diesel engine. to pull either a fifth wheel or medium/large travel trailer.

I own a 31' travel trailer. Gross weight is 7500 lbs. But we travel out to the rockies on trips to Yellowstone, etc. and find that we are best served by a truck with a diesel engine. We used to have a Ford 250 2wd Crew Cab with the older 7.3 L diesel. Since that engine Ford had trouble with the next two engines they installed. In 2011 they came out with a new engine designed and built by Ford. I lost my F250 in the April 27 Tornados that came across North Ala. and replaced it with a 2011 Dodge Crew Cab 4x4 short Bed with the Cummins Diesel. At that Time I didn't trust the Ford engine since they had two previous failures. You should avoid the pre-2011 models if you go with a Ford diesel. I don't know how well the new engine is holding up. I've been real pleased with my Dodge. I take it to a dealer in Pulaski that sells both Ford and Dodge trucks. I asked them about the repair issues with both trucks and their preference is with the Dodge Cummins if you are towing heavy loads or traveling in mountain areas.
