  • Now, for the record, I am not ready to toss Barbee aside just yet. However, for those of you constantly whining about firing him (and were you also pushing the "Fire Lebo" mantra), who is the right guy?

Head north on 65 to Huntsville Alabama; CLM is ready for prime time; IMHO

Today is a great day to love Auburn, a little better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.

  • I looked at both colleges in Huntsville, and there is no 'CLM'. There's a CLA at UAH - is that the one you reference?

I would approve this hire. He would probably be the best we could do at this point. We can forget getting any kind of up and comer at the mid major level like Shaka Smart or someone like that. Coach Acuff has great relationships with all the high school coaches in the state and he runs a brilliant offensive system.

  • What is my budget? Is AU serious about hiring a coach with a proven record of success? That would mean AU must be willing to make the next coach one of the top 10 highest paid NCAA basketball coaches. Or does AU keep hiring up and comers and hope they get lucky?

I am not getting paid a million a year to have a list of potential coaches but off the top of my head guys with long term proven success and/or NCAA tourney wins that I think we can get for $2M per year or under (in no particular order):

Chris Mack - Xavier - Current Salary $500K
Ray Harper - Western Kentucky - Current Salary $375K
    Rick Byrd - Belmont - $550K
    Bob McKillop - Davidson - $320K
    Ben Jacobson - Northern Iowa - $290K
    Wayne Tinkle - Montana - $125K

To get guys like Gregg Marshall or Randy Bennett then AU would have to spend top 10 type money $3M + per year. Might take that to get Chris Mack to AU too since Barbee has done such a poor a job in recruiting and the program is currently in shambles. Would pay off in increased revenue when we had a top 25 program but I am not sure AU has the will to succeed at that level.

  • You can fire Barbee today, hire any of the top 25 high school coaches in America, and I'll bet they do better than what we just witnessed.

Hell, they can hire me and I cant do any worse. In fact, if I finish any lower than Barbee just did in the conference rankings then I will donate my salary to scholorships (provided the SEC stays at 14 teams)

I'll take Creighton, Marquette or Murray St HC of the mid major coaches. Like Okie St coach as well
I would like one more year of Barbee as well

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe we could hire any of those coaches. Times have changed where if you build a program the right way, you're not really a mid major anymore. All these "mid majors" are competitive on a consistent basis now. Look at Butler, Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita St, Belmont, Northern Iowa. Murray state is getting that way too. It's getting to where Auburn is not as attractive of a job as one of those schools to a coach. Especially when we only give a coach 3 years to right the ship. These upper teir mid major coaches are going to hold out for top teir major conference jobs or else stay put and keep winning where they are. Auburn is a bottom teir SEC job. Say what you want about our arena, as fabulous as it is, if we keep firing coaches after 3 years no one is going to want to come coach here.

I know the coach at Murray St would leave. The players love to play for him, but he wants to move up in the coaching ranks. Same for Creighton. I agree with you that we will not get a coach from the Butler, VCUs of the world. They have established programs and would not leave for an AU type program. Otherwise we are looking for an up and coming assistant.

You make it sound like AU goes around firing coaches all the time. The truth is we have not fired a basketball coach before they completed their 5th season since the 1940's. No doubt Barbee has done enough harm to AU that he deserves to be fired and no prospective coach will look at Barbee's results or his recruiting efforts and think bad of our AD for firing him.

You are correct though that schools who are paying their coach in the $1.8M range or higher such as Butler, Gonzaga, VCU, and Wichita State have nothing to fear from AU. That is why I listed guys who have done very well at their schools but could more than double their salary at AU. How could anyone not like Ray Harper? The guy has one of the most impressive resumes out there for building programs and getting them to a championship level. He is the type of coach that we should have been looking for when we hired flavor of the year (before NCAA tourney blowout loss anyway) Tony Barbee.

Marquette pays about $3M a year for Buzz Williams. Not happening. Same for Creighton which must be well over $2M a year since they hired him away from a Big12 school. Steve Prohm (Murray State) only makes about $300K but he is only in his 2nd year as a head coach.

This guy ^^ is delusional. Murray State is only candidate that would even answer our phone call. I think he'd turn us down too. Unless he's from here which I don't think he is.

Creighton is extremely established and is a legit basketball school. Okie State is a 10 times better job than AU in bball. As is Marquette; metrolpis-based basketball school.

Hope you are right sir, but look in the mirror. We have to think outside of box; something our AD is incapable of
