Barbee expects Tigers to fight back

  • I also agree and disagree with Rob. This group is a lot of seniors. Lebo recruited seniors. And yes, it's Barbee's third year. But Lebo didn't recruit many talented players as you can see. And I don't remember that many talented high school players looking Auburn's way before Barbee got here. That's beginning to happen now which causes for slight optimism. But I understand your frustration. Losing sucks, ESPECIALLY losing to a team by 20 points at home and that same team gets beat by Alabama. But I don't think Auburn is a quick fix like a lot of other teams.

This game tonight does not set up well for Auburn. Fans are really negative because the bottom fell out against Kentucky and then the updykes laid one on Kentucky last night. Believe me, I know the feeling. Vandy is 1-3 in the SEC but has lost close games to Kentucky and Ole Miss, both good teams in spite of what is said on this board. Vandy will appear 15 points better tonight than most of our fans expect. A loss tonight and the "fire this coach too" fans will be in full force. We have changed coaches enough to suspect that maybe the problem is not so much the coach as it is good basketball players just don't want to play for an SEC team that has been a doormat for pretty much of 50 years. Our program is so low that it is not going to change in one or two years. I have been disappointed because CTB has had so much attrition from the players he has recruited. However, he is clearly making progress on the recruiting front and I believe he will make us a contender if he doesn't get discouraged and leave because our fan base has unrealistic expectations. A win tonight would be great medicine for the program.

Vandy is favored in tonight's game, and tonight's game will have nothing at all to do with the future of Tony Barbee. As I've said, it's a long-term project and Barbee has full support. He's not going anywhere.

Interesting points by a lot of posters. I do have one very simple question.

If Gus is in year three will we give him a pass by saying he is using Chiz less talented players? I say no. Three years in and we still have a walk on starting PG that has a worse shot than I do. And has an average handle on the ball. There are prolly better PGs at the student Act center playing RIGHT NOW!

And lets remember. the talent level is no longer Lebos issue. The kids that TB has recruited and then sent away...were his recruits. So that would beg the question of why did we recruit them in the first place?

We get 4-5 new recruits every year correct? There are only 12 players on the team at any given time correct? So this is where I struggle mightly with the understanding that we are almost starting a brand new basketball program?

    $92,000,000 Arena.
And still losing to teams by 20+ points.

It just doesnt make sense anymore.

PM- In your educated opinion.... How long do we have to go on this project? 2,3,5 years?

And with that. Are we saying that at AU it takes 5-8 years to get the program even to an average SEC team? When at other schools it takes 2 recruiting cycles?

What would be the main reasons for it taking us this long?

Ok, RanRob I have tried to be diplomatic with you, but that last post crossed the line. I have watched Wallace closely now for three years and there is no doubt in my mind that you have a better outside shot than he does!!

He did everything he could to get Trevor Lacey and he didn't get him. I am not sure of the dynamics of why we lost some of the recruits we did, but one thing is for sure basketball and football are two entirely different beasts. You get kids that go home during the summer and their AAU coach tells them they are not being used properly etc etc and then they are gone. The one kid Josh Langford turned out to be an absolute thug supposedly. Barbee inherits a horrible situation that nobody could win in. The dynamics of losing while you are trying to rebuild are very tough. Look at Grant over at Alabama he took over a program that tons of talent and upside and they are not exactly tearing it up even with last night's win. You either believe Barbee can get the job done or you don't. I do. I think he is recruiting the kind of players that will make Auburn better pretty quick. NCAA tournament better quickly probably not, but it only take one or two bigtime players and boom you are there.

Your last sentences are exactly what concerns me. One or two guys could turn a program around in basketball. But three years in and we still have the one guy that Lebo recruited and got that was a major pull for him...Frankie.

And please understand. I want nothing more than to see a winning. But it is hard to understand how we continue to be a poor team. But the hardest part is that we can look so good in spurts....and so dang bad in other spurts. +12 missed 3's....OUCH!

Is being .500 in league play unrealistic? That's all I want... But do not see it happening.

I don't have lofty goals for this basketball team as I ave seen it too many times not perform to a level that makes it warrant a high goal set. But we are looking at the most sr laden team in conf. And that gets us blown the eff out at home? Yes that is what that gets us!

Yes I think .500 is realistic in league play. That would be pretty darn good if you look at our SEC record for 50 years. Our seniors are not great, but they are better than they were when Barbee arrived. His development of Chubb and Wallace has been remarkable in my opinion. Neither of those kids are really SEC talent. We need to start with some talented freshmen and keep them four years. That is when we will start competing for championships. Jeff Lebo's last class was pretty talented. Most of them left because we changed coaches. That is why we need to stay with one guy until we know he just can't get it done. We do not know yet whether Barbee can get it done. We are getting some good prospects to give us a look - that is progress. As I said before, the only disappointment I have with CTB is that his attrition rate from his first two classes was high. Some of that was bad luck, some of it was having to take a marginal prospect because you can't get the ones you want, and some of it was probably on CTB. I"m glad to hear PM say CTB is not going anywhere and that he has the support of the administration. I may feel differently in three years.
