  • You do not have to agree or tell me Auburn is successful and on the rise. I will judge this by your actions and the actions of my enemies as sound proof I am a feared foe.

  • Agreed. This incident will hurt Bama as much as AU if not more. The guy will be easy to find but legal team needs to get going quickly. It will take that to get phone number and copy of call. Not Finebaums fault but how it works. At the least either AU or city can take the guy for everything he owns to cover costs. In the mean time no retaliation is needed accept for the insane guy that did it.

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. -George Petrie (1945)

  • I was an AU student the day that Bear died, and I don't remember anyone rolling Toomers Corner. And I agree that Alabama really doesn't have any real traditions. What they call tradition is actually statistics. They like to claim that they've won 6 of these or 8 of those. Every team has statistics. That redneck can kill a tree, but he can't kill a tradition.

  • I was a student in Auburn when Bear died and there was no rolling of Toomer's Corner. The girl I was dating worked at what was then a Baskin Robbins just down from J&M when we heard the news about Paul Bryant. I was taking her to work at 3 pm and picked her up after the shop closed. I'd have remembered something like that.

Auburn people feel a deep and passionate responsibility to uphold standards not written on paper, but lived from the heart.

  • Just found this online. From what this guy says the trees will be ok. I sure hope he's right!

I agree that if it true the guy should be punished...but I wanted to repost here a comment I placed elsewhere the other day
This may not go over well but here it goes.
I am not a huge fan of anything Alabama. I take great joy in beating them soundly on the field and in every sport imaginable. However, I respect their institution as one of higher learning just like Auburn. They have some good fans that are respectable as the great and vast majority of ours are. I seem to see lately an inclination on our part to become a little more like them due to our success. I am dismayed at us justifying our behaviour and actions by the way they have treated us. It is not my place to tell us how to act. But our "names" on the sight and our ways of disrepecting them are not justified by their behaviour. The day Bear died was a sad day in Auburn too. I remember the day as a student there. Many do not know that he allowed Auburn students permission to use his name and likeness in SGA campaigns. He was good natured in latter days to my knowledge. After the terrible 9 years of being humbled by them prior to my freshman year, I just try to remember where we have been and where we have arrived. It's just me but I want to treat them as I want to be treated. and set the example for my children so we better appreciate who and what we are without ever stooping to the level of our in state competitors. We are Auburn (to coin a phrase from Marshall) and we have no need to act superior or disrepectful. We know who and what we are and what we stand for. It's time we act like it.
I am not your parent , your preacher or your coach but I had to get this off my chest."

I agree, and I appreciate your post. I'm an Auburn alum, taught at the university for
eight years, and have been a fan since I was a little girl. I have friends and family who are obnoxious, arrogant Bama fans and I have friends and family who are fair-minded, respectful Bama fans. Happily, the latter outnumber the former. While listening to the obnoxious ones can make me want to scream, I try to remember that the greater victory lies with those who love their team but can display good sportsmanship.

However, if that guy really did poison the trees then I hope he is swiftly brought to justice.

  • True class but i'm not surprised by this. Remember, this is the school that played take the money and run and son of a preacher man prior to the iron bowl!

I really respect your position and I should probably feel the same way. But I hate bama with a passion and have taught my kids and grandkids why I do. I actually was a bama fan growing up. But after getting to Auburn, I started to see the true side of what went on at bama. It only intensified as time went on and Bryant came on the scene. I wrote a sports column for The Plainsman and hence got to know all the coaches and most of the players. Several of Bryant'splayers (including the captain of one of his teams) have become friends of mine over the years. They have openly shared stories with me. Few people would believe what has gone on at bama for years, and it continues.

Proud Tiger, thanks for your post. Perhaps if I knew what you do I might feel differently! Ive read stories from Bama players during the Bryant era hinting at some dark things that went on I can't say I like Alabama, but as a fan with no inside knowledge I try to err on the side of being a good sport - not that I always succeed.

You've sure piqued my interest with these stories of yours! War Eagle!
