Auburn's new coaching staff has made JUCO recruiting a priority.

  • The players on the current roster should be ashamed that Coach Malzahn are bringing in new guys from junior colleges. It will be interesting to see how many of the current players will answer the challenge or roll over. At least that's the way I would look at it if I were a safety, linebacker, or D Lineman on the team now.

  • I have always heard JUCO was not the way to build a program, never questioned it until now. If a guy can play a couple or three years and contribute then I see little difference in a redshirt with a backup year from HS recruit. Juniors and Seniors will traditionally make up the bulk of your 1's and 2's and if you need to shore up some with JUCO's then so be it.

Today is a great day to love Auburn, a little better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.

  • You have to go JC when the previous staff didn't develop or retain...

I had hope previously that this staff could come in and win eight or nine. It looks like they see talent as a bigger problem than I suspected.

    "In Gus I Trust" lol

    Get em Gus!

    tongue

I heard "trust the coaches" a lot the first three years concerning the last staff. I won't use the word "trust" in regard to a staff until they have done something to earn it. Now I will definitely give Gus a chance to earn it.

  • Brian, looking at the players from '12, I really don't see any names that jump out at me as leaders (maybe Dismukes on O). None of the returners, regardless of the number of stars by their names, played with the passion that I could honestly say they are shoo in for starters in '13. If at some point in the near future you find the time can you break down our roster. I know it is thin, and I know there are a lot of guys who didn't put in the work that they needed to get ready to play at the SEC / Auburn level. I am hoping this coaching staff comes out with the toughness, passion and discipline it is going to take to get these guys into playing shape. Whether they (players) realize it or not it is time to get the mind set they need to play an entire game.

New blood is good for Competition, I still wonder why we are leaving some EE spots unfilled when we stopped recruiting Lemond Johnson, did he do something Pike like?

Why would that be your first assumption? Different coaches take a liking to different players. Lemond Johnson leaving was a mutual thing.

"Needs to have a close eye on things as fans". Man that is funny. I love auburn as much as the next guy but you need to step back and take a deep breath. What exactly are you going to do if you see something with your watchful eye that you don't like?

I hope someone is watching you with a close eye. I'm afraid we might lose you over the ledge before the season even starts next year.

I agree with your message for the most part, I think it was your delivery that got some people riled up. BUT you are most certainly correct about Chizik and his "Long term plan" bs. Gus will be judged once he puts a product on the field. Sorry folks, but that's the way big time college sports go. He's not saying we will damn Gus or anything, or even say we will judge him as doing a bad job. He could be great. Judging doesn't automatically mean something bad. We could judge him as have had doing a great job. You never know.

  • Just like I was roasted for right before the season when everyone was pissed that Chiz wouldn't name a starter. I posted that Chiz can keep as quote all year as he wants, but when the season starts, we the fans will judge what we like and don't like. Well, the fans spoke and Chiz, just 20 months after hoisting the Natty trophy, is history! I know almost every big time donor, I see them at functions I am invited to like at the Presidents mansion 2 weeks ago, at donor parties the day before bowl games, on game days, etc, and they are fans just like we are. The fans control the bottom line. What got Chiz fired was fans voting with their wallets. Believe what you like, but JJ would have never fired his friend if we the fans hadnt spoken up. JJ is a friend of mine also for around 15-20 yrs.

  • It is more than curiosity. Recruiting for two years was fantastic but Gus is loading up with JC players. The way last years team played, I'd guess they weren't coached and will be coached long and hard to reach SEC talent for more time than this coach has had them next fall. Few successes in life have ever had to wonder what happened when they didn't come through and I doubt that these guys have any trouble admitting they didn't try hard enough and neither did their coaching. If the vets are worth a thimble of cat pee, some will really turn too during summer S & C and the play book. Otherwise, they'll leave and from my view, good riddance. I know football is tough although I never had the size to play even JR High, but I have had engineers under me and I knew the difference between those carrying the ball and those who were dead weight. It was my behind that they were carrying.

Well IMO, your buddy Jacobs needed to be in the car with Chizik when he left. Whether GM's hiring is a good or bad thing is irrelevant at this point, but I don't think GM would have been hired if JJ wasn't the AD. I hope GM is wildly successful at AU and I hope we compete for titles regularly, but if I or a lot of other AU alums had any power whatsoever, GM would not be coaching at AU today. We will support and hope for great things from GM, but he wasn't even close to 1st choice (out of realistic expectations). So, IMO, the fans don't have a lot of power or control much of the bottom line.
