B-ball:Sorry PM (and for anyone else giving Barbee more time)...

  • it isn't JUST the fact that we have struggled in his first 3 years (just like some of the other AU coaches that Marshall pointed out). Let me explain:

    1) His teams give up on him. (I believe because he doesn't INSPIRE his team...but he does constantly CRITICIZE his players.) which brings me to...

    2) He has poor leadership traits. (Good leaders PRAISE in public and CRITICIZE in private)

    3) He routinely, regularly points his finger in 1 of 2 places. (The culture and his players). Good leaders do not do that no matter what.

    4) His connections in the basketball recruiting world do not give him an advantage at Auburn. (Nike and Admissioins and AAU and stuff...this was a terrible oversight by Jay Jacobs and Co. from the very beginning).

    5) His coaching style gives our basketball team zero COMPETITVE ADVANTAGE in our league (or out of it). His style REQUIRES to play toe to toe with better athletes. Jay Jacobs cannot take credit for what happened on the field in 2010 (Chizik actually wanted to hire Malzahn). But, Malzahn DID give us a strategic advantage. I give JJ credit for hiring Gus Malzahn as head coach. This gives us a STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE. Kirby Smart did not and would have set us back another 6 years trying to catch up with AL and LSU at their own games.

    6) His players don't just quit during the game, many have quit the team (and you can't build squat without a team to build on). His first 2 years set the program back another 4 years.

    7) MOST IMPORTANTLY, BARBEE is NOT in a program that HE can win in. (see all reasons above). The right coach CAN win at Auburn. When will we finally realize that Barbee is just not going to be that guy? He does not fit the AU culture. Best of luck to him and all, but the writing is on the wall for anyone who will be honest enough to read it.

There, I've said it. War Eagle! Let's move on.

I haven't stated any opinion on what ought to happen. What I have said is that people very close to the situation say he is going to be back.

  • I have read many of your articles and have listened to you on Sportscall (and love that you do those things). But, you have stated on Sportscall that you thought he should have at least 1 or 2 more years and that fans should understand. Bill shared your sentiments on that day.

The previous coaches that you pointed out in your morning article a couple of days ago is what I was referring to at the top of my post. I provided the link. Seems like you are setting expectations of support for more time to me.

Not trying to start an argument. Just facts.

    #PMARSHONAU: Ramblin' around ...

Early years are tough for Auburn basketball coaches, football coaches with chemistry, no long-timers in sports that matter most and more.

  • I have to agree with Phillip here, he has not offered his opinion, just what other people have told him.
As to quik180's statements, I agree with some of them, others I am still evaluating. Time will tell one way or the other.

You did not listen to the same Sportscall that he spoke on then. I listen to them just about every day. I wasn't referring just to the article and I am not mad at PM. But, he did say it.

I didn't say in that column what ought to happen. Those are simple facts. Auburn basketball is hard. Whether Barbee needs to stay or go is someone else's call. I haven't said anywhere or written that I think he or anyone else should be fired. I don't do that. I also haven't said he shouldn't be fired. I've said people I talk to say he won't be. I've said it's my opinion that he won't be.

As for Chizik, look back and you will see numerous I wrote, starting with the Arkansas game, that he probably wasn't going to make it.

  • If Tony Barbee is retained after this year, and considering his 3 year overall record at Auburn- I think CGC should file a discrimination lawsuit against the university. I fully support Auburn and their decision to move on in football. I will not support a decision to retain CTB for another year in what should be referred to as the biggest embarrasment in Auburn sports. To all the apologist that seem to justify this pitiful coaching job for 3 years-shame on you . We were told that by building this great new facility, known as the Auburn Arena we would be able to attract a good coach, who in turn would bring in talented players to make us competitive in the SEC. It has been a total disaster and meltdown by Barbee. From players leaving the program, to poor free throw shooting, to no rebounders, to no offensive leaders, to leading the conference in turnover margins, no team leadership- this all falls back to coaching. This guy has had 3 years to make Auburn competitive in SEC basketball- no one is expecting a run at the NC. Many say, basketball is a tough sell at Auburn-why is that? How can Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vandy produce competitive BB teams, Kentucky & Florida are national powers- even Miss St has been more productive than Auburn over the years. Auburn fans have been patient, supportive, given of our money- it's time to expect some return and we haven' t gotten it. Blame it on our history, our football culture driven thinking or anything else you wish- I blame it on CTB and coaching (the lack thereof). War Eagle!!!!!

You did. However, before the Arkansas game, you said that it would take an epic meltdown ( or something along those lines) for him to lose his job. Of course, I don't know what else you can call 2012 other than an epic meltdown.

  • I am not an apologist but I have had season tickets the last three years and I am in favor of giving Barbee two more years. In my opinion, he took some early chances which did not pay off. There is a core of youth which appear promising. We do have a signing class which appears promising as well and I would like to see them through their sophomore year before forming an opinion about where we go, or don't go, from there. Also, K.T. Harrell will be on the active roster next year. Now, if there is an exodus of players, this coming off season, my opinion may change. WDE

Without an epic meltdown, he would not likely have lost his job.
