Auburn's next 10-win season....2017?

  • When I saw that there could be indications of Chizik being retained, my mind immediately thought, "great, we're 3-9 this year, could 6-7 be seen as improvement next year and earn him ANOTHER year beyond that?". 19auburn49 echoed the same thing in another thread, which got me thinking of just how far it could drag things out.

This is not a prediction of what will happen....just a glimpse into a potential nightmare....

    2011: 8-5
Five blow-out losses, one quality win. We're young, so we all live with it and look forward to a "break out" year in 2012.

    2012: 3-9
Total melt down, hot seat is glowing, but somehow another year is granted.

    2013: 6-7
A 6-6 regular season earns a birth to the Disney Life-Size Talking Rapunzel Doll Bowl....one of 14 bowls held in Houston, where we lose to SMU. But we only lost to our four biggest rivals by an average of 12 points instead of 20 points, and we had a new offensive coordinator, so he gets another year. And hey....he DOUBLED last years win total! Hooray!!

    2014: 9-4
We manage an 8-4 regular season, losing to the four best teams we played, but beating a struggling Georgia, who is in transition after losing Richt to Texas. We then beat North Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Bowl (UNC is forced to play a true freshman QB after losing their starter to grades).

    2015: 7-6
We're young again? We had a new coordinator again? Fact is, we sucked again, and Chizik is finally relieved of his duties.

    2016: 8-5
New staff....decent year, won a couple big games, lost a few we should have won....but fought hard for 60 minutes, got a few unsportsman-like conduct penalties for knocking heads off and roughing passers. We like it.

    2017: 10-4
Ahhhh, finally. Sweet relief. The reign of mediocrity is finally over as Auburn wins the SEC West in a three-team tie breaker with a 6-3 conference record (9 game SEC schedule now). But we lose the SEC title game to #4 South Carolina (coached by Kirby Smart) and a close one, 26-23. We then beat Mark Richt and #12 Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

    2018: pre-season AP ranking of #11.

Let's just hope the "keep Chizik" chatter was coming from friends and family, and not from decision makers.

  • With Chizik at the helm, I don't see us getting more than 6 wins again. He's got his "system" into place now = us thoroughly being f***ed

I'm sure this will be another of your very popular posts with much back slapping all around. BTW we had 2 "quality" wins in '11, usc and fl. Gee, on which side of the argument do you fall?

I'll bet you $1,000 on each year that you are wrong, but that wasn't the point, was it? There is a potential dream/nightmare for every day in the future, no matter what happened yesterday or what happens today. And, as for Auburn, no one knows what will come to pass in the future whichever path Auburn chooses. But this was a creative way to keep that pot swirling, a distasteful scenario for each of the next 5 years instead of just stating that "Auburn's going to stink if they don't make the change I think is imperative". Paint that picture, the more detail the more real it seems. Keep manipulating the mob!

In truth, if Auburn hired Saban on 12/1 it could turn out to be the biggest blunder they ever made. No one knows how any coaching regime will pan out, not even you. But why don't you create a scenario for each of the best candidates out there, in your opinion. Maybe your manipulative fantasies will sway the small minded lightweights running the university to take the direction you prefer.

Sorry, but Florida wasn't a quality win in 2011, at least not in my opinion. They were 7-6 overall, 3-5 in the SEC with wins only over Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt (combined 5-19 SEC records). They were 1-6 against teams with a winning record. The one win? 6-5 Furman.

Beating Florida sounds good, but they were not good last year. Not at all.

And are you surprised which side of the argument I fall on? And my point wasn't a hidden one....I completely expect mediocrity under the current coach.

Can you give me a single indication that the scenarios I (jokingly) laid out are not most likely to happen? Not hope and change, but real, observable indications.

What have you seen to suggest Auburn football is likely to win 10 games under the current coaching situation?

UF was not a quality win. UF was terrible last year.

  • So...JADENNIS, I guess you're not a Chizik fan. Just joking, I greatly enjoy your posts. I think you have watched as much football as most of us. Anyway, I think the same. He lost the team at the fourth quarter of the Ole Miss game and lost 80% of the fans after Vanderbilt. Nothing was left after Texas A&M. Now, the question I have is...how can you possibly retain or regain the blessing of so many after losing it so deeply?

You know, I guess saying I'm not a fan would be accurate. As of right now, I think we'd be better served to have a new coach.

But at the same time, I'm kind of a "okay, what can be done to fix this" kind of person. So, if he's retained, I won't keep harping on the idea that he should have been fired (I mean, until we start losing again next year).

But if he's kept as of December, my next focus will turn to what changes he'll make to help things out. I'll hope Van Gorder gets to name his choices on defensive hires, for one. He wants to play big and physical, I'm hoping he gets to bring in some guys that will help coach that way. And I'll hope some of the staff accused of "coddling" the players are let go, even if that's super-recruiter Trooper Taylor.

We need some fire and hard a**es in the program right now. It makes me miss coaches like Hugh Nall that were mean and tough football coaches. That's what our team is not...mean or tough.

    AU's 2013 schedule:

    Aug 31 WASHINGTON STATE
    Sep 7 ARKANSAS STATE
    Sep 14 MISSISSIPPI STATE
    Sep 21 at LSU
    Oct 5 OLE MISS
    Oct 12 WESTERN CAROLINA
    Oct 19 at Texas A&M
    Oct 26 FLORIDA ATLANTIC
    Nov 2 at Arkansas
    Nov 9 at Tennessee
    Nov 16 GEORGIA
    Nov 30 ALABAMA

    Pick out the 6 wins. I can't.

I tend to agree with you JA. 2009, bare with him because they're young. Offense is scoring, defense can't stop a piece of tissue. 2010 due to an excellent player on offense that took the team on his shoulders and elevated everyone else, an OC who went lights out, and some seniors on Defense that rose up when it mattered, we won an NC. 2011 expectations hit a brick wall. Offense is handicapped, defense is sad and we escape with the same record of '09, 8-5. 2012, complete and utter epic failure. An HC who wants to say everyone is young, and there are all new systems. At the end of the day though football is still football. Either you want to play or you don't. Players with the exception of a few don't look like they care. I do not see anything changing going forward.
