The problem is USC didn't go undefeated...they also had a loss.

Alabama's one loss was to 11-1 USC.

USC's one loss was to 9-3 Arizona State.

They both had great non-conference wins....USC over Alabama (11-1) and Michigan (10-2), and Alabama over Nebraska (9-3) and Penn State (11-1).

The fact that USC beat Alabama doesn't mean so much when you consider that they also lost to Arizona State. When both teams have a loss, it's natural to consider which loss is worse (or better).

I have no problem with them both claiming a title that year.
