Auburn staff will have to earn their paycheck....

  • in years to come if the recruiting cycle continues as it is. Flame away if you will but I think our coaching staff may have jumped the gun a little too soon this year in the sense of trying to spread our brand nationally. I guess a NC played a huge role in thinking we could branch out many states away and pull top prospects from other schools. The staff needs to go back to the drawing board and recruit locally and then branch out. Our tradition is pretty good but there are still many schools and programs that take the cake in that department that are located all over the map. To get to that prestige we have to set up shop in our bread and butter recruiting hotspots and hit them hard and often and coach these guys up. If you look at the remaining top recruits left on the board there are some distance factors taking place. Quite frankly I dont think our brand is big enough just yet to pull these guys. In the past we have recruited the state of GA, Al, and FL. Now we are trying the waters way outside our comfort zone so to speak and its something I'm not fully understanding? I think Chizik is a great in game coach but Tubbs was a master of coaching a diamond in the rough type guy. No i'm not saying I wish we still had Tubbs but we all have to admit he was very good at doing just that. We will be fine in the long run but we have to get back to our roots or UF, UGA, LSU, and UA are going to leave us in the dust. UF will always have top athletes due to the state they live in as is for UGA as well. LSU was a sleeping giant before Satan took over and he ran with it. Now he is at UA and they are a force right now. There is nothing going to change that aspect so we have to get our elbows dirty as well and push and shove people to the side like we used to. Right now the program needs stability and I'm hearing rumors from big alumni in my area that Trooper and Luper will be departing after this season and possibly some more defensive coaches depending on CVG's defensive scheme and hiring his own people. That will be a great thing in the future but patience is a virtue and our fan base not always has that. Until then lets keep our heads up. WDE

  • If the recruiting cycle continues as it is? This staff has had 2 incredible recruiting classes and this 1 will still be very good when NSD is over. That shows that it is outside the norm to have a "down" year like this one. They have already been selling AU nationally the last 2 years and it payed off. You really have a bad sense of perspective.

  • This is way off base in my opinion. There was no greater time than this to go 'more national' in our recruiting. We just won the BCSNC. If not now, when?

Unless you want to only go head to head against Troy, UAB, La Tech, So. Miss, and Ga Southern, you have to reach out nationally. Let's face it, we are surrounded by other teams who are doing a dang good job recruiting, too. Going up against uat, lsu, uga, fla, fsu, usce, arky, and even miami on all your recruits is going to mean that you will lose more than you get. Same goes for them, too. You don't hear the bammers crying about the ones they lost? They compartmentalize with the best: "we didn't really want them anyway."

Cast a wide net, and go where the fish are.

I agree there is some risk to branching out, but I disagree that it is a failed venture. In fact, one might say it was the best time to do it. If we miss we can say it was playing time related.

This class has missed not having the one standout come out early and never waiver. Other than that it seems to be shaping up pretty normal.

  • Couldn't disagree more with your premise. Besides back to back top 5 classes, and at least a top 15 class this year, how is they have "jumped the gun"? Tubbs didn't have to deal with the $$ flowing through these states that is clear now, along with the updykes (and apparently FSU) cranking up the media machine to discredit anything we do. In fact, I am of the opinion, we need to do less in state and MORE national recruiting. The $$ influence is MUCH less outside of the REC network, and they won't take those risks. We won't have these type of TJY flips. To be successful, we HAVE to go national. Just look at the type of in-state pressure that is put on these kids from Kwon to JW--kids who it really should be a no-brainer to come to AU. Recruiting is ten times harder for AU than say UF, UGA, updykes or LSU. This coaching staff has done a remarkable job recognizing that and competing toe to toe.

If Luper and Troop leave next year, that will be one of the saddest days in AU history...not some "great thing"...

Signing day is only two days away. You really don't need to jump to conclusions at this point. All you have to do is wait two days. Then you can post all of the dumb posts you want based on AU's actual class rather than posting dumb posts now based on your assumptions of what AU's class will be. I suspect you'll not be posting on signing day. But, I'll wait and see.
