***Auburn newcomers ranked No. 9 by Baseball America...

  • Baseball America’s annual ‘Dandy Dozen’ recruiting rankings came out and for the first time since the 2007 season Auburn is among the top 12 teams, checking in at number nine.

According to the magazine, “Auburn’s balanced class is its strongest since this coaching staff arrived in 2008.” The magazine goes into great detail on freshman outfielder Sam Gillikin and junior college transfer infielder Damek Tomscha, who it claims “might be one of the nation’s most impactful juco transfers thanks to his power bat and his power arm at third base, where he is a sound defender.”

Here's a list of the newcomers with their rank on BA...

    169 Sam Gillikin, of L-R 6-2 195 Braves (33) Hoover (Ala.) HS
    253 Rock Rucker, lhp/of L-L 6-5 225 Russell County HS, Seale, Ala.
396 Trey Wingenter, rhp R-R 6-7 190 Mariners (36) Bob Jones HS, Madison, Ala.
    485 Damek Tomscha, 3b R-R 6-4 225 Cubs (19) Iowa Western CC
Terrance Dedrick, rhp/of R-R 5-10 175 Shelton State (Ala.) CC
Conner Kendrick, lhp L-L 6-0 185 Northwest Florida State JC
Jordan Ebert, 2b/of R-R 6-0 180 Baldwin County HS, Minette, Ala.
    Dylan Smith, 1b/of R-R 6-3 215 Clay-Chalkville HS, Pinson, Ala.
Matt Schultz, rhp R-R 6-2 200 Oswego (Ill.) East HS
Cole Lipscomb, rhp R-R 6-1 180 Edgewood Acad., Elmore, Ala.

  • Awesome...some good news.

I see a lot of them are from Alabama....either the state has a ton of good prospects or we did pretty well on in-state recruiting.

  • Awesome. I really haven't followed college BB that much in a few years. I know a lot of guys go pro right out of high school but sometimes they're stuck in the minors for a while, but do top BB prospects translate faster like in basketball, or do they need more time to develop more like football?

  • Good stuff there Bryan. Hope it translates to a good year on the diamond.

I thought we also signed a pitcher from Lake Brantley HS in Orlando?

Negative. We have a commitment from a senior at Lake Brantley that is their SS and also the starting QB on their football team. I think he and another commitment from Hoover High who starts at QB are going to be two kids that really make an impact in the SEC. Dirt bags. BTW, I think the kid from Hoover has more TD passes this season than Jeremy Johnson.

Also have a comitt from pitcher Kevin Davis out of T.R. Miller. Word is he's probably a first rounder and won't end up at Auburn. He's the quarterback for Miller and is playing football despite many people's advice not to. If he was at almost any other school in the state he probably wouldn't even consider playing football, but so is the football culture here in Brewton. Personally, I'm glad he's playing because he's a heck of a Qb.
