The Alabama Crimson Tide will have some work to do this offseason in trying to cut themselves down to the standard 85 scholarships college football permits each FBS team. Research by Matt Hinton at CBS Sports indicates that Alabama currently has signed 95 players, ten over the normal limits. The Tide must take away scholarships from ten players whether via dismissal, transfer, or greyshirting multiple playres. Alabama currently has oversigned the most players, with Washington (91) and Virginia (90) fairly far behind.
Even after a concerted crackdown on by the SEC over the past three years, no coach in any league overshot the mark this year with as much gusto as Nick Saban.
Defeat doesn't finish a man - quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits. - Richard Nixon
Saban holds tryouts every spring. If you are on the team already, you must still "make" the team each spring or you are at risk of being cut. This spring, 10 existing players won't be good enough anymore and will be cut.
The results speak for themselves. While it's an abomination of what college athletics was originally intended to be, Saban's tactics have forced other schools to start doing the same thing, or get run over in the process. Since wins are the only thing that matter, other programs have no choice but to employ similar tactics...though no one does it quite as welll as the original.
