My wife and I have been staying at the Provencial on Chatres Street for the last few years. Reasonable and convenient. Staff is very pleasant and accomodating.

I normally stay at Loft 253. Good price for a cool spot.

I have lived in NOLA for 11 years. I would recommend you stay uptown vs. downtown or in the Quarter. Based on you request I would say check out the Columns Hotel. I have not stayed there, but the location and charm are great. Not sure the Rooms are the greatest ever (it is an old Victorian house), but the place is great. Nothing like having your own giant porch to sit on for coffee or afternoon drinks. Check it out.
