***A great example of recruiting twists and turns...

  • If you haven't followed the Gunner Kiel situation, here's a summary...

***Gunner Kiel from Columbus (Ind.) East is a 5-star and the nation's No. 1 QB acc'd to 247Sports and most recruiting rankings.

***Kiel committed to Indiana in July after considering offers from just about every top program in the country. His brother, Dusty, was a quarterback at Indiana.

***Kiel decommitted from Indiana in October after his brother was demoted from the starting position. Dusty is no longer with the team.

***Kiel went on several unofficial and official visits before committing to LSU Dec. 27 over Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.

***Kiel was supposed to report to LSU Monday but didn't show up for a morning meeting. Now, he's expected to enroll at Notre Dame today.

***This leaves LSU with some question marks at quarterback with former UGA quarterback and JUCO transfer Zach Mettenberger the presumed starter and no experience behind him.

***The whole situation could have affected Auburn and Patrick Miller. If Kiel would have notified LSU earlier, they would have had a scholarship available for Miller to enroll at LSU last week. Instead, Miller is enrolled at Auburn after LSU asked him to pay his own way for a semester.

That's college football recruiting in a nutshell.

  • Wow. I wonder how many times that happens and it ISN'T publicly known. e.g. possibly happened to AU in recent memory.

  • NFL coaches have to deal with agents to better their team,
College coaches have to deal with 17-18 yo teenagers to better their team.

    Neither is very pleasant.

  • I think that it will come down to the fact that Gunner did not want to go to school so far from home and as things got closer and closer to moving to lsu he realized he couldn't do it. He wanted to be closer to family, if I am right, I can not fault the kid for this.

  • Seems like there are some funny happenings going on at LSU. I'm not one to start rumors or dive into them, but after reading that "Where There's Smoke" article and everything else, it really seems there are a lot of things stirring under the covers over there in Baton Rouge.

I thought about that Miller connection earlier. Glad he is here and not at LSU.

It happens a lot more often than you'd think

  • Whew. Sounds liken we dodged the proverbial bullet Bryan with our getting Miller! What a GREAT addition he is to our class plus he is now safely enrolled and taking classes. (One of my rare huge sighs of relief during the tumultuous recruiting season which, for some reason, seems even more in turmoil this year than in preceding ones)
