A dose of reality.....

  • We better drink it now. The truth is that Gus wasn't a developer - he was a coordinator. He never had to stay in one place long enough to learn how to develop players. Last year was the first year he had to truly develop all the QBs that stepped on the field. He dang sure didn't develop Kiehl Frazier who has tremendous talent but if the practice comments are truly accurate, he is not very advanced - we saw that on the field last fall as well. There were freshmen QBs throwing the ball all over the field for other schools - none possessing any more abilities physically or mentally than Kiehl. A better look would be Moseley after his entire career under Gus prior to the LSU game - not very sharp. So we are left with a bit of a mess on offense.

The OL is just young. Auburn has never recruited as well as we have under Grimes. Unfortunately it took a couple of years to get our recruiting mojo going on the OL but I'm not about to complain about that. It's just a part of the deal - but we are awfully young. That will hinder us. Receiver talent is there but if we miss assignments and/or the QB can't deliver it, it won't be a positive result. Jury is still out on the tailbacks. Our best statistical rusher from the spring (Grant) is not getting much touting headed into the season and we don't have a pound it out tailback. We do have a QB that can run the option but that's not gonna work against LSU and uat. I like Mike Blakely's natural ability as a runner and with a running threat that can set up play action. I hope Mason is a good one but not sold on him yet. But again - a lot of it comes down to a young but talented OL. Just truly wonder if our top end on offense is solid.

Defensively we should be better with plenty of depth and talent on the line. Linebackers should be solid but not spectacular. The secondary like the DL has a chance to be special. If we can get to a dominant level on D quick enough, we can compete for the SEC. If the transition to BVG ball is a little slower, we could lose both of our September SEC contests and be out of the running before we start. That is a sobering reality. The Clempson game is important for confidence. Lose that one and things get mighty tough, mighty quick. Go 3-1 in September and the SEC is still up for grabs. Should be interesting.

  • Sounds fair enough. Personally, I think frazier is gonna be really good this year. We have a coach that understands very well how football is played on AND off the field.

I talked to two people that saw Frazier scrimmage yesterday and said he didnt look good at all. They said he was ok as long as it was just swing passes. Also said he couldnt hit receivers down the field with any consistency. They both thought we have problems at QB,and if we dont do a great job running the ball we are in for another long year.

I saw the scrimmage yesterday and I thought he looked as good or better throwing the ball as Mosley or Trotter last year plus he has the running ability we saw last year. His passing ability is much improved and will get better with experience under CSL. I agree with with nujaC that CGM was not a great QB coach.

If the OL can give a little time, KF will be fine. Last years OL ... well about 2 seconds it seamed like

I think you make a decent point, but (not to nitpick you or Clint): how many programs recruited Mosely or Trotter?

Maybe some of our development at quarterback goes to who we recruited.

I heard a great interview with Barry Switzer the other day on Sirius about this very thing. He said he looked for great recruiters - not great coaches. This is why uat has done so well. I don't believe they have better position coaches than anyone else.

Ultimately, if we continue to miss on the quarterback position, like we have a few times, we will struggle with respect to the elite programs.

Maybe Mosely will turn into Tom Brady and Frazier will turn into Cam 2.0 - I'd be ok with that.

  • Can you name the true freshmen qbs that were "throwing the ball all over the field"? Who is the last true freshman qb who had a lot of success in sec?

QB from Ohio State last year is the first one that comes to mind. Matthew Stafford, Peyton Manning, Stan White, Tim Couch, Randall Cobb, Chris Leak, Jessie Palmer, Mitch Mustain, Max Smith, Brent Schaeffer at UT, Casey Clausen, Erik Ainge, and Tyler Bray just to name a few. All performed better than Gus' handiwork. I really believe Nutt was behind Mustain's great play and now understand why Gus felt compelled to defend that.

  • I asked for a lot of success Stafford completed 52% with 7 td and 13 int, Cobb 52% for 542 with 2 td and 5int, mustain 52% for 894 10 td 9 int, Schaffer 48% for 302 2td 1 int, couch 38 % for 276 1td 1int, Palmer 21/38 for 291 4td 3int. Peyton manning is arguably the greatest qb of all time and he was pretty good but not great. Ainge and clausen were also pretty good. I'm not defending Gus and his qb development, just saying we don't need to judge Frazier off of his performance as a true freshman.

  • a. i never heard anyone call Gus a quarterback guru. He did a very good job bringing Cam into his own over the course of the year but his offense isn't conducive to going into a pro-style offense the next year. We recruited Frazier because he was perfect for Gus's system. Frazier is a very talented guy and a very good leader, he proved that in his all-star game his senior year. But as far as developing quarterbacks, Gus dumbed his system down and didn't require his guys on the field to make adjustments and audible, they just had to make the first read or two.

    b. Shon Colemon really hurt us. Don't downvote me, just listen. We banked on him being the guy to anchor the line starting last year and life happened. He will get his shot to earn a spot now but instead of coming in with a beast at left tackle that is experienced and proven, we have a beast that isn't. Recruiting highly touted guys is fine and good, but anyone in the know understands that offensive line is the hardest position to recruit and judge. Tubbs had a lot of 2 and 3 star linemen that could ball and got drafted, I will give him and Nall that. They could recruit their butt off with the under the radar linemen.

    c. Defense. I don't think Auburn has ever had as much raw talent on the defense top to bottom. BVG's complex system will take adjustment and time. Give it to them, it will be worth it in the end. This year might not be pretty at times and with the youth we still have across the defense, getting confidence early will make all the difference.

Come on dog. Frazier was 5-12 for 34 yards and 2 picks and looked like he hadn't practiced in 6 months. Not in the galaxy with any of the list I presented. I can remember Stafford's success against us - whooped us like a bunch of rented mules. We shall see on Frazier - he looked awesome in high school but early indicators are not inspiring.

  • I just gave you the stats (facts). None of those guys had a lot of success as freshmen. Frazier was put in some tough situations and not given the same opportunities as those guys

I would have been more confident with some success throwing the ball. Those guys had some. We are building off practically none. Concerning.
