A different kind of atmosphere

  • As I write this, tipoff is still almost an hour and a half away, but the student section at Auburn Arena is already filled almost to capacity and making noise. Orange shakers have been placed in every seat in the arena.

Kentucky is in town. This Kentucky team might not be the same as last season's national champions, but it's still Kentucky. And when it's basketball season, that means it's a big game.

Students lined up before the doors opened were treated to pizza by athletics director Jay Jacobs and head football coach Gus Malzahn. Everything is in place for the wildest atmosphere we've seen in the three-season life of Auburn Arena.

Charles Barkley is in town. I just saw Frank Ford, another former Auburn star. Gerald White, his backcourt pal on the 1986 Elite Eight team, is in town, too. Late All-American Mike Mitchell's jersey will be retired.

Can Tony Barbee's third Auburn team make it complete by breaking a 13-game drought against Kentucky? We'll know in a few hours.

Come on Tigers!!! With Mitchell's jersey being retired tonight I think it would be only appropriate to bring down the house with a win of KY - circa 1974-75!!

  • It's Kentucky, enough said. I remember my dad , Mack Kirkland, talking about guarding Cotton Nash(all american) in early 1960s and holding him to 13 pts. My dad wore #34, some great players have wore that #. I love basketball and here's hoping for a W tonight!!!

  • Really nice to see the arena packed out. Would LOVE to see AU doing that on a regular basis. College basketball is a great sport. One *little* thing I wish the students would not do: that "airball" chant. I know they do it at schools everywhere, but it's really poor sportsmanship.
