4 - 8 Next Year???????????

  • Today, I was watching college football live on ESPN and they had Bob Griese and Andre Ware on. Ware looked at the fact that Auburn is losing 14 starters, then looked at the schedule (brutal). He said Auburn next year would be this year's version of Texas, and at best would go 5-7, with 4-8 more likely.

    I don't know what our record will be, but it insults me for ESPN to say that next year we'll do what Texas did this year. For one thing, Texas had LOTS of talent coming back and was picked high in the polls.

    Auburn has an outstanding head coach and staff, so I can't see them coming apart at the seams like Texas did.

    But, hey, that's OK. We are the Rodney Dangerfield of College Football. Nobody likes us, nobody respects us, nobody expects anything out of us. That's OK, because in the end, it is only what the Auburn family thinks.

    It will be interesting and I don't know what record we'll end up with, but if anyone wants to bet money that we'll go 4-8, I'm willing to take you up on that!

  • I think 4-8 is a stretch, but next year could be a little rough. We lose more than just starters. Every year, it's the "toss up" games that make the season. When you get your program to a point where there aren't many toss-up games, you're in good shape. We aren't quite there yet because of what we lose. 2012 will be better. 2011 is a big question mark.

    If I'm mixing a lot of honesty with a little pessimism (which is sure to change after spring practice, etc), then the schedule below could be reality for 2011...with a lot of learning and close calls along the way.

    Fla Atlantic - W
    @ S Carolina - L
    @ Arkansas - L
    Florida - L
    @ LSU - L
    Ole Miss - W
    Samford - W
    @ Georgia - T

    To me, everything would have to go completely wrong to get to 4-8, but if you look, it's possible.

    I'm thinking more along the lines of 6-6 to 8-4. With our schedule, if we can pull off 8-4, then watch out in 2012....we might be ready for another run in the SEC-West.

  • I guarantee you that 4-8 prediction was completely pulled out of his butt -- no way he actually looked at our schedule before saying that, because we have three almost sure wins before even considering the conference games.

    But hey, if these guys could predict anything with accuracy, Auburn would have finished 8-4 this year and Bama and Ohio State would have played for the NC.

    I think we have an excellent chance to win 7 games. Typically, Auburn is really tough at home, so I'm not going to say we can't beat MSU and UF at home. And for that matter, when I look at the game that we gave UAT at Jordan-Hare in '09, I will never say that we don't have a chance against them at home.

    A lot will depend on our recruiting class as well as how well players get developed during spring training.

    It will be fun. I'm sure we'll be proud of them, and as you point out, the future going forward looks very bright.

    Miss St. - at home, we win.
    @ Clemson - we win.
    @ S. Carolina - we win. Dominated them. Our guys are going to be better than people think. Lot of guys played this year.
    @ Arkansas - we win. They lose Mallet.
    Florida - at home, new coaching staff - we win.
    @ LSU. They still are not very good on offense. T
    @ Georgia - remember ThUGA this year. We go there with attitude and blow them out.
    Bama - at home - we are experienced by now. We win.

    I think we compete for the West again. I have confidence in CGC and CGM. CTR's defense is going to be GREAT! Offense will not have to put up a LOT of points, but may, anyway.

    I can hardly wait.

    I respectfully take issue with a couple of these: Clemson loses their QB, I say W; USCe is USCe, W; Florida - same team different style coach pick 'em; Alabama loses as much as we do - W... I say 10-2 or 9-3. Call me overly optimistic but these are the same coaches that motivated a horrible team into a 8 win team last year.
