2011 Signing Limit

  • Phillip or Bryan, If we are at 22 currently and get commitments from Wright, Florence and Roberson, do we still have room to sign Cyrus K. and/or Collins if they were to come our way? I know you typically make room for these kinds of players, but the total numbers do appear tight.

  • Some hard decisions are going to have to be made.
But damn, Do you ever think we would have been in the situation with the previous staff?

    War Eagle Baby!!!

  • We could take both of them and Erique Florence. I seriously doubt we take both Collins and Koandjio. Hope we get Koaundjio and Florence and get Roberson back from Texas Tech.

Yes, Auburn will make room. They will not turn away players of their caliber. There could be room if one of the current commits doesn't qualify or someone grayshirts. Auburn staff is prepared for any possibility.

  • Technically we can take all of them, its just we have to get it down to 25 schollys for next year, this can happen with guys that don't qualify or make the cut. I don't think we want to sign the full SEC allowed 28, but it is possible.

  • The 22 current commits includes 3 that are already enrolled and do not count towards the 25 limit.

that's incorrect, we used all our scholoarships last year, plus a few that were left over from 2009 so none of the 3 already enrolled can count back. All of them will count toward the 2011 signing class.

The rule states that no more than 28 players may sign between signing day and May 31st. Guys who sign before or after that period do not count against the 28 only against the total scholarship limit.

But I believe that you have to count them towards some particular years recruiting class total. If they sign before signing day and enroll early, they either have to count back to the previous year, which can only be done if you didn't already sign 25 for that year, or they have to count forward to the current (or upcoming) class total.

In 2010 we were able to enroll kids early and count them back to 2009, but only because we hadn't enrolled 25 kids in the 2009 class. But we also filled up 2010 with 25 kids that enrolled. So guys like Jonathan Rose that enrolled early this year cannot count back to 2010, as it's already been filled. Therefore they must count forward to 2011's 25 player total.

Otherwise coaches would just arrange it so that you have tons of kids enroll early to get around having to count them towards any 25 player limit. Programs would be enrolling 5 kids early and 25 kids after signing day and end up with 30 kids coming in. That doesn't happen (unless, as noted above, you have 5 spots open from the year before).

Yes, you are correct but the 3 you mention have not signed and will not until next Wednesday, which is signing day. They will still count toward 2011 signing class. I wish we could get around it with a loophole like last year but we can't.

The reason coached like January enrollees is that they can be counted back on last years class, and the 25 limit is based on how you finish the year, not how you started. Chad Slade and Gayden Rozsoll are no longer with the team so the coaches can fill those two spots from last years class with a kid who enrolls in January. Cam Newton was also on last years class and since he has announced for the NFL his spot on last years 25 is now open for an early enrollee.

    Stolen from ESPN's Ivan Maisel:
If a school didn't have 25 signees in place when the school year began, January enrollees may be backdated to count in that class. In other words, a linebacker who plays high school football and signs in January may be counted as a classmate of guys who played in college games in the same season.

January enrollees are great for schools that have players who leave early for the NFL. Alabama and Florida announced last week that they each had 11 players enroll in January. Florida signed only 16 players a year ago, so the Gators could backdate some signees. Alabama will be counting more toward 2010.
