1972 An SEC Title That Auburn Could Claim

  • In 1972, Auburn finished with a 5-1 record in the SEC. Auburn's only loss of the year was to L.S.U. who finished with one loss and one tie in the SEC. The only other one loss team was Alabama who Auburn beat head to head in the the amazing 17-16 game. An odd rule existed that Alabama by playing two more SEC games than Auburn (the extra games included Vandy and Kentucky) was recognized as the champ. Auburn was giddy upsetting Alabama (and should have been) but I have often wondered why this team was not recognized, as the best in the SEC. Surely Auburn's accomplishments in 1972 surpassed all others and this team's recognition as the best in the SEC is long overdue!

  • Technically, Alabama had a better record. The rules were not fair to allow them an extra game, but I would say punt Bama punt slightly makes up for it.

  • that was a ploy by Bear for years. he scheduled an extra game and always either Vandy or Kentucky. that way he was ensured of having a better record. thats how they got so many SEC championships.
