What they said: Defense

Nick Fairley sacks ULM quarterback Kolton Browning/Todd Van Emst

Noteworthy: Defense held Louisiana-Monroe to 38 yards rushing, 270 yards.

On defense's progress: " think the progress is evident. We’re nowhere near where we need to be or want to be or where we are going to be. To be able to hold a team at bay when you are playing a bunch of different combinations, last year that didn’t happen."

On playing MLB Jake Holland for the first time: "I thought he did a good job. I thought he played hard. He made some mistakes, but it was his first time out there. It’s going to make this football team better. We can’t do what we did last year. We can’t hold up."

Noteworthy: Increased his SEC leads with a sack and three tackles for loss.

On his dominance this season: "I'm just doing what Coach (Tracy) Rocker tells me to do. If he tells me a move, I'm going to do it. If he tells me to move my hands, I'm going to move my hands."

Noteworthy: Was third on the team with five tackles. Also broke up a pass.

On holding ULM to 3 points: Communication was a big thing. We had to communicate on defense. I think we did a good job. We got everybody in the rifht places and just made plays."
