What They Said: Defense

AUBURN – Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof and defensive players talk about Saturday’s 49-31 victory over Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Senior safety Zac Etheridge

DC TED ROOF

Noteworthy: Defense held Georgia to 10 points over last three quarters.

On getting better as games go on

“I think what we need to do is extend warmups by about an hour. We gave up a long pass play, the 9-yard drive. It isn’t always pretty, but the resiliency of our guys and the competitive spirit has really shown through time and time again.”

On pressuring QB and getting four sacks

“We had some opportunities where we didn’t finish on the quarterback early. Our offense kept coming and got a lead. We forced them to become one-dimensional, and our guys made some plays that were big in the football game.”

On Georgia WR A.J. Green

“I think he’s going to be playing for a long, long time and make lots of money.”

OLB CRAIG STEVENS

Noteworthy: Led team in tackles with nine.

On winning his final game at Jordan-Hare Stadium

“It was amazing. The crowd showed up and showed so much love and support. It amped us up for the game. Georgia came to play. I’m glad we were able to come out with a victory.”

On winning the SEC West

“It’s great. It’s a feeling that is just indescribable. No one on the team has ever experienced it. We are just trying to soak it in right now.”

MLB JOSH BYNES

Noteworthy: Was in on three tackles

On winning the SEC West

“Actually, it didn’t even hit me until Coach called me to the sideline and put Jake (Holland) in. I came to the sideline with Mike Blanc, Antoine Carter and Nick (Fairley). We gave each other a hug. I was like ‘dang, we’re going to Atlanta.’ We’ve been pursuing this since the spring. We’ve been saying it since the spring, saying it since media days. We all came here to win a championship. We finally have the opportunity. We just have to finish the season out.”

S ZAC ETHERIDGE

Noteworthy: Was in on three tackles.

On his last game at Jordan-Hare

“I had to go around the stadium three or four times at the end. You’ll never experience anything like this ever again. I’m glad for the Auburn family. I’m going to miss it.”

On giving up 10 points in last three quarters

“On the first couple of touchdowns, it was just guys that were too much into the game. We gave up big plays and gave them free points. We just fought back. Everyone read their keys and bought in and we came out on top.”

DT ZACH CLAYTON

Noteworthy: In on two tackles and was a force against UGA running game

On defense’s come back after first quarter

“The senior group got up and said ‘We can’t allow them to score anymore easy points.”

On winning the SEC West

“It’s huge. That’s something that hasn’t been done around here since 2004. It’s great what these guys have been able to accomplish.”
