Tigers speed past Alcorn State

AUBURN - Auburn stole bases at will and took advantage of seven hit batters and five walks to beat Alcorn State 7-1 Wednesday to sweep a two-game series at Plainsman Park.

Creede Simpson stole two bases and hit a double Wednesday.

The Tigers, 22-0 winners on Tuesday night, got just eight hits. But those were more than enough. Auburn runners stole eight bases, the most in a game going to be at least 1974.

Auburn improved to 3-2 going into a weekend series at No. 8 Arizona. Alcorn dropped to 1-4.

First baseman Garret Cooper had the biggest hit of the game, a bases-clearing double in the third inning. Right fielder Jay Gonzalez had two hits, walked twice, scored two runs and drove home two runs.

Jay Wade, the second of four Auburn pitchers, went 2 2/3 scoreless innings and gave up three hits to get the win. Freshman Rocky McCord, making his Auburn debut, got the start and gave up one run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Alcorn State had no answer for Auburn's running game. Runners were 8-for-8 stealing bases and are 20-for-24 for the season.

The top three hitters in the Auburn order - Bobby Andrews, Gonzalez and Ryan Tella - were on base 10 times against the Braves. Andrews stole three bases, Gonzalez two, Creede Simpson two and Jarred Smith one.

Running, bunting, stealing bases and playing defense is the Auburn way in 2012.

" It's fun," said Simpson, who had a double and an RBI. "It's just a whole different ballgame. With the new bats, there aren't as many long balls and doubles. You have to do different things to put pressure on the opposing team. We call it speed ball. That's our game with the bunting and the stolen bases. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense. It's fun to be a part of."

Auburn coach John Pawlowski said the Tigers had opportunities for a bigger day on offense

"No doubt," Pawlowski said, " but like I told our team, you are going to have to keep putting pressure on teams."
