BATON ROUGE, La. – For Auburn’s baseball team, it was another verse of the same song. For the third straight game, LSU jumped to an early lead and, for the third straight game, Auburn could do nothing about it.
Cullen Wacker has hit safely in 10 consecutive games
LSU scored four runs in the first inning with the help of two infield hits that Auburn coach John Pawlowski thought should have been outs and two walks. Auburn never recovered, falling 8-2 and suffering its second consecutive sweep to fall to 15-9 overall and 0-6 in the Southeastern Conference. No. 3 LSU improved to 22-2 and 5-1.
“You give a team five outs in first inning and good teams are going to take advantage of that,” Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. “We gave them a couple of extra outs that inning. Throw in a couple of walks and a couple of hits and that’s a big inning and we are down 4-0 right out of the chute. That made it really tough today.”
After getting 23 hits in the first two games, Auburn managed just six hits Sunday.
LSU batted around in the first inning, despite just one ball leaving the infield. Auburn starter Will Kendall (0-1) faced seven of the LSU hitters and was charged for all four runs, allowing three hits and walking two in 2/3 of an inning.
LSU outscored Auburn 9-0 in first innings in winning a series from the Tigers for the first time since 2009.
LSU starter Cody Glenn (4-1) picked up the win, logging 7 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out two.
Auburn’s first run came in the second when Garrett Cooper doubled to right and scored on a Blake Austin single, which made it 4-1 LSU at the time.
A Ryan Tella sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded made it 8-2, scoring Mitchell Self, who had walked.
Cullen Wacker finished the day 1-for-3 for Auburn, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games with a third-inning single.
Auburn concludes its five-game road trip on Tuesday when it visits Troy. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Riddle-Pace Field. The Tigers host Alabama for a three-game series, starting Thursday at Plainsman Park.
