FREE: 5-star RB commits

Racean Thomas, the five-star running back and No. 3 prospect in Alabama, has made his choice.

And he did it on a trip to the Plains.

Just after 3 p.m. CT Friday, Thomas, an Oxford (Ala.) standout, Tweeted the following.

"Officially committed to the Auburn Tigers."

A short while later, his father, Frank Thomas, confirmed the commitment with Charles Power of 247Sports.

When asked if the commitment Tweet was accurate, Frank Thomas replied, "Yeah. ... That's where he is now."

Thomas is commit No. 14 for Auburn but arguably the biggest given that "Roc" was an in-state target that also was being recruited by Alabama.

Thomas is the No. 4 running back nationally in the 247Composite and No. 30 overall prospect.

"He's been comfortable about it every time we've been [to Auburn]," Frank Thomas said. "They let him know they want him but when I was there with him they didn't put any pressure on him."

With Thomas on board, Auburn jumped two spots to No. 14 in the team rankings.

Thomas is the first 247Composite five-star on the 2014 commit list for the Tigers. Receiver commit D'haquille Williams of Mississippi Gulf Coast is a five-star in the 247Sports ratings, but not the 247Composite.

Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was Thomas' primary recruiter.

Thomas is the second running back commit for Auburn, joining Kamryn Pettway of Prattville (Ala.).

Thomas rushed for 1,768 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2012. He added another 200 receiving yards.

NIEBUHR'S TAKE: "Having seen Roc compete in person, it's pretty obvious Auburn is getting a player with special skills. Not only does Thomas have good size, but he is built like a ... rock. Thomas displays excellent one-cut ability and accelerates extremely well. That makes him extremely dangerous in the open field. He is strong enough to run between the tackles but also has the quickness to get around the edge. The bonus is that Thomas also is an excellent pass-catcher out of the backfield."
