According to the AJC, Fanning was suspended for last Friday’s game against Upson-Lee and did not return to the team for practice on Monday.

Wide receiver Zack Witchett from Washington in Atlanta, Ga., who is committed to Georgia, was reinstated to his team last week after a two week suspension.

“Zack did all the things he had to do to get back on the team as far as apologizing and discipline and such,” Washington coach Stanley Pritchett told the AJC.

BAMA OFFERS METTENBERGER: Alabama has offered a scholarship to quarterback Zach Mettenberger from Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan., according to the AJC.

Mettenberger, originally from Watkinsville, Ga., signed with Georgia in 2009 but was dismissed from the team in the spring and plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery.

Mettenberger also has offers from LSU, Arizona, Louisville and Cincinnati.

TOP SIGNEE SUSPENDED: USC freshman receiver Markeith Ambles was indefinitely suspended by Trojan coach Lane Kiffin this week. Ambles, rated as one of the nation’s top prospects in the 2010 class, signed with USC out of Henry County in McDonough, Ga.

Auburn showed interest in Ambles but decided not to pursue him due to off the field issues.

“I’ve said before, we have extremely high standards of what we expect our student-athletes to do, and if someone doesn’t want to maintain those standards ... they’re not going to be a part of our program,” Kiffin told the Los Angeles Times.

THIS AND THAT: Offensive tackle Antonio Richardson of Nashville, Tenn., has transferred from Ensworth to Pearl-Cohn to improve his academics. Richardson has a number of SEC offers including one from Auburn ..... Safety Kadetrix Marcus from Stephenson in Atlanta, Ga., has set up official visits to Tennessee, West Virginia, South Carolina and South Florida. Marcus had a lot of early interest in Auburn but the Tigers plan to sign one safety and have focused their recruiting on Erique Florence from Valley (Ala.) High.
