Phillip's Lunchtime Musings, Oct. 27

I was interested to see former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville’s comments about the current Auburn team. He said he and his staff recruited a lot of the players, which it did. And he said he didn’t recruit quarterback Cam Newton and had not seen him play.

The fact is Auburn coaches did recruit Cam Newton out of Westlake High School in Atlanta. They just didn’t offer him a scholarship. If they had, would he have started his career as a Tiger instead of a Gator? There’s no way to know for sure, but Newton attended Auburn's camp and there’s no doubt there was a family fondness for Auburn.

“The Auburn program has a rich tradition,” Cecil Newton told me last week. “I’ve followed them from way back.”

Offensive coordinator Al Borges made the call not to offer Newton, apparently because he thought he wasn’t polished enough as a passer.

How different would things have been for Newton and Auburn if he’d been a Tiger from the start? …

Speaking of Newton, it truly is irresponsible for reporters – on the air, online and on paper – to continue to say, as if it were fact, that he stole a computer and was kicked off the Florida football team. Neither is true. …

The Florida-Georgia game is a big one almost every season, but this one is a bit strange. Georgia lost four straight games and three straight SEC games before turning it around and beating Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Florida has lost its last three SEC games. Yet Saturday’s winner emerges as the top challenger to South Carolina in the East.

Florida actually controls its own destiny because it still plays South Carolina. Georgia’s loss to the Gamecocks started its skid. …

I found it interesting that Auburn coaches decided not to practice in full pads Tuesday. For the past month, players and coaches alike have talked at length about how much they believe plysical, full-pad Tuesday practices have helped them win games. …

Until next time. …
