Auburn and Alabama will meet at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Friday for the sixth time. Interestingly, in four of those games the losing head coach has resigned or been fired shortly after they were over.

Auburn won 9-0 in 2000 in the first Iron Bowl played at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mike DuBose had already been told he would not be retained. Auburn won 17-7 in 2002, and Alabama coach Dennis Franchione was gone to Texas A&M in a matter of weeks.

In 2006, Auburn won 22-15 and Mike Shula was fired after four seasons at Alabama. And in 2008, Tommy Tuberville resigned as Auburn’s head coach days after a 36-0 loss.

It would be very surprising if either Auburn coach Gene Chizik or Alabama coach Nick Saban follows that trend after Friday’s game. …

Despite all the controversy swirling around Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, he’ll win the Heisman Trophy if he plays well against Alabama and South Carolina. …

Younger players on Auburn’s team will be in for quite an awakening when they arrive at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Sure, they’ve been to Mississippi State, Kentucky and Ole Miss. But you could add those all together and not equal the atmosphere they’ll encounter Friday. …

Defensive tackle Mike Blanc and defensive end Michael Goggans will have to fidget on the sideline throughout the first half Friday. They are seniors and really should have known better than to get lured into taking swings at Georgia players. They didn’t get much sympathy from their teammates, nor should they have. …

There will, no doubt, be more rumors about Newton’s status over the next two days. What I can tell you for certain is that he has practiced with the first team all week, and a player who is ineligible is not allowed to practice. …
