The industry-leading Top247 for the class of 2015 was released Wednesday with eight prospects from the state of Alabama included in the rankings led by running back/safety Kerryon Johnson from Madison Academy.
Johnson has visited Auburn twice this year.
“Just to be regarded that high is an honor but I’ve also got to continue the hard work I’ve put in and keep getting better,” Johnson said. “I’m not going to be satisfied with 31. I’ve got to keep pushing.”
Johnson is ranked a 4-star and the nation’s No. 1 safety and No. 31 overall prospect. As a sophomore, he rushed for 1,784 yards and 28 touchdowns on 185 carries leading MA to the Class 3A state championship. He added 67 tackles and four interceptions on defense.
He’s open to playing running back or safety in college.
“I’m just happy to be ranked at any position,” he said. “This does kind of open things up. Before, it was kind of 75-25 running back. Now, it’s probably 50-50.”
Johnson, 6-foot and 185 pounds, has an impressive list of offers that includes Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Clemson and Vanderbilt.
He would like to have a decision early next year.
“My top three is still the same with Florida State, Alabama and Auburn. No particular order right now,” he said. “South Carolina and LSU just jumped on the train and they’re a definite possibility too.”
There were two more in-state prospects in the Top 100 including No. 69 Desherrius Flowers, a running back from Vigor who committed to Alabama in April, and No. 98 Daron Payne, a defensive tackle from Shades Valley who already has offers from Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss.
The rest of the in-state prospects in the 2015 Top247 include No. 127 Richard McBryde, a linebacker from Charles Henderson with an offer from Kentucky, No. 144 Christian Bell, a defensive end from Hoover with offers from South Carolina and Mississippi State, No. 238 Darrell Williams, a linebacker from Hoover with an offer from Mississippi State, No. 241 Edwaun McNeil, a linebacker from Sipsey Valley and No. 246 Juantavius Johnson, an offensive guard from Lincoln with an offer from Auburn.
