BMATT247: An instant classic

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Georgia-LSU game was an instant classic and more than lived up to the hype as Aaron Murray out-dueled Zach Mettenberger to give the Bulldogs a 44-41 win in Athens. The former roommates at UGA combined to throw for 670 yards and seven touchdowns.

Murray was superb in a win over LSU.

It’s a bit ironic that it was UGA’s pass rush on the final drive that proved to be the difference in a game that was dominated by the offenses. LSU was out of timeouts and couldn’t risk running a draw play, which allowed the Georgia defense to pin their ears back.

Will we see these two teams in a rematch Dec. 7 in the SEC Championship game? It’s possible. I really like Georgia’s chances of winning the East but LSU faces a tough road ahead with Florida Oct. 12, road trips to Ole Miss and Alabama, and finishing out the regular season at home against Texas A&M and Arkansas.....

Has the SEC ever had a season with four quarterbacks as good as Murray, Mettenberger, Alabama’s A.J. McCarron and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel? Maybe someone can come up with a better foursome but I can’t.....

It wasn’t pretty but credit South Carolina for fighting back from a 10-0 deficit on the road without staring quarterback Connor Shaw to beat UCF 28-25. I have a feeling the Gamecocks are going to have a lot of ugly wins this season. That’s a heck of a lot better than ugly losses.....

An interception in the endzone with less than two minutes left stopped a 16-play, 79-yard drive by South Alabama and preserved a 31-24 win by Tennessee to end a two-game losing streak. The Vols needed that one bad because their next three games are Georgia and South Carolina at home and Alabama on the road.....

Arkansas hung in there against Texas A&M but, not surprisingly, Johnny Football was too much to handle, accounting for 321 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in a 45-33 win. That Aggie defense continues to struggle giving up 484 total yards to a very average Hawg offense. It’s going to cost A&M a game or two down the stretch if it doesn’t improve. For the Razorbacks, I was really impressed with the running back duo of Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins. Both will have a chance to play on the next level.....

I heard on ESPN Gameday Saturday morning that No. 23 Wisconsin at No. 4 Ohio State may be the game of the year in the Big Ten. Really? Because the SEC plays at least one game of that magnitude just about every week. It was a decent game, Ohio State won 31-24, but if that’s the game of the year in the Big Ten, then the Big Ten isn’t much of a conference again this year.....

I also heard on Gameday that Alabama would come out and make a statement against Ole Miss and they certainly did in a 25-0 win. It was a good win for Bama but I thought it was a worse loss for the Rebels. Hugh Freeze and his staff not only have to prepare for a road trip to Auburn next week but also have to restore confidence in a team that has to be shaken after a poor performance across the board in Tuscaloosa.

There will be a lot on the line for both Auburn and Ole Miss next Saturday. Neither team wants to start 1-2 in the SEC and the winner will have an early leg up in the SEC bowl pecking order.
