Johnson will start

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn true freshman quarterback Jeremy Johnson will start his first-career game Saturday against Western Carolina, coach Gus Malzahn announced.

"Nick Marshall is not 100 percent so we are going with Jeremy Johnson at QB tomorrow. Have a lot of confidence in him and he is well prepared," Malzahn posted on his Twitter account Friday afternoon.

Marshall, who has started the Tigers’ first five games, is not expected to play after injuring his right knee against Ole Miss last Saturday.

Johnson battled Marshall for the starting position right up until the final week of fall camp. Johnson hasn’t played in a game this fall but has worked extensively with the first and second-teams during practice.

Johnson signed with Auburn after a stellar career at Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. Johnson was named Mr. Football after passing for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns, and rushing for 705 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior.

Marshall, a junior college transfer, has completed 71-of-120 passes for 920 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s added 288 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries.

Marshall led Auburn to a 4-1 record including a game-winning drive against Mississippi State four weeks ago.

The Tigers host WCU at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 1:00 p.m. CT Saturday. The game is available on PPV.
