Carl Lawson did it on the field last fall piling up 31 tackles-for-loss and 15 sacks as a junior at Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga. He dominated at every camp and combine he attended this spring.
Lawson is one of just 21 5-stars on 247Sports.
Lawson wasn’t given a 5-star ranking by 247Sports Monday. He earned it.
“Lawson is college-ready from a physical standpoint and based off of eyeballing him in person and watching him go through drills at the Charlotte Nike Football Training Camp earlier this month, as well as his dominance on film, we feel that the Auburn commit is a five-star prospect,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst JC Shurburtt said.
Lawson, who committed to Auburn in April, was excited about the news but is also keeping it in perspective.
“It’s nothing different than being a regular player,” Lawson said. “I’m really excited to be ranked that high but it doesn’t mean anything until I prove it.”
Lawson, 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, said he plans to prove it this fall at Milton and when he reports to Auburn next summer.
Lawson, who is also rated the nation's No. 1 weakside defensive end and No. 18 overall prospect by 247Sports, was back in Auburn Saturday for Big Cat Weekend. He brought along eight family members
“Big Cat was great. I think it was a great day,” he said. “One of my step brothers kind of started the water balloon fight. It was a great day for my family. We just went up there and had fun.”
Lawson also spent a lot of time talking up Auburn to the other top-rated recruits at Big Cat. And he sees some exciting days ahead for the Tigers’ 2013 class.
“I promise you some more 5-stars are coming to Auburn. I know that for a fact,” he said. “Our class is just going to jump.”
Lawson plans to attend NIKE’s The Opening camp in July.
Another top Auburn target, safety Vonn Bell from Ridgeland in Rossville, Ga., also moved up to a 5-star Monday. AuburnUndercover.com broke the news Friday that Auburn along with Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama would be four of his seven finalists when he cuts his list in the coming days.
